Writing Tools expands: Smart Reply, grammar checker, and "Write with Siri"

iOS 27 takes Writing Tools well beyond basic rewriting: a dedicated AI grammar checker arrives, Smart Reply suggestions in the user's own writing style, and a "Write with Siri" toggle above the keyboard. The goal is to reduce time spent formulating text.

Native grammar checker and transparent menu

Apple announced a dedicated AI grammar checker at WWDC 2026, sitting alongside the traditional spell-checker in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS Golden Gate. The technical novelty is that the system presents corrections in a translucent menu that slides up from the bottom of the screen, showing the suggested revision next to the original text — a presentation that makes the AI's reasoning visible rather than intervening silently. According to MacRumors, the menu appears in Messages, Mail, and any app with an open text field.

Smart Reply in your own style

The Smart Reply feature — contextually suggested responses — is updated to account for the user's personal writing style. Apple Intelligence does not propose generic replies, but learns from message and email history to calibrate tone, length, and vocabulary. The feature is part of what wi-fiplanet calls "systemwide automatic proofreading" in its post-keynote summary.

"Write with Siri" above the keyboard

Bloomberg had anticipated a "Write with Siri" toggle in the bar above the keyboard, now confirmed by the keynote. Tapping it with a text field open, Siri AI opens a panel for dictating or describing in natural language what to write — translating intent into formatted text. There is also a "Help Me Write" option that activates when Siri is invoked directly on a text field.

Why it matters

Extending Writing Tools from a rewriting tool to a composition-assistance system is a positioning shift: Apple is no longer intervening only on already-written text, but entering the writing process itself. The risk is progressive homogenisation of AI-generated text; the benefit, for those writing in a non-native language or under time pressure, is tangible.
