Independence from the iPhone
Until watchOS 26, Workout Buddy required a compatible iPhone nearby to function properly. With watchOS 27, Apple breaks this constraint: the feature can now run independently on the watch itself, as confirmed by AppleInsider. For users who train in pools, gyms, or while traveling without a phone, the change is immediate and practical.
Coaching that remembers your history
Coaching becomes more contextual: Workout Buddy can now draw on the user's workout history to provide real-time feedback on pace, distance, and duration. AppleInsider reports that motivational comments and tactical guidance adapt to the fitness profile built up over time, rather than treating each session as an isolated event. Spanish language support broadens the addressable user base.
New running data
Alongside this, watchOS 27 introduces more granular run tracking, with additional metrics designed to measure progress over time. Apple did not publicly detail which data points are being added, but AppleInsider describes a general improvement in workout insights dedicated to running.
