visionOS 27: Thórsmörk immersive environment brings Icelandic highlands to Vision Pro

Apple adds Thórsmörk to Vision Pro's Environments library: an Icelandic mountain ridge with day-night cycle, Northern Lights, and spatial audio. Landscape colors reflect dynamically in the background during video playback.

A new landscape to immerse yourself in

With the first visionOS 27 beta, Apple introduced a new Environment called Thórsmörk, named after the Icelandic mountain ridge dedicated to the Norse god Thor. According to MacRumors, the Environment offers a day and night experience of the icy landscape surrounding a lake, complete with wintry sound effects and running water.

Northern Lights as a technical detail

Thórsmörk includes a view of the Northern Lights, distinguishing it from previous environments like Yosemite, Mount Hood, or the Moon. The most technically interesting detail is its dynamic response to video content: when watching a video while the environment is active, the scene's colors are reflected in the surrounding snow and water, increasing immersion — a concept first introduced with the Jupiter environment in visionOS 26.

Context in the Environments library

Vision Pro Environments serve both as backgrounds during app use and as immersive spaces during media viewing. Thórsmörk expands the geographic and climatic variety of the library, previously dominated by North American landscapes.
