tvOS 27: Smart Downloads brings automatic downloads to Apple TV

tvOS 27 introduces Smart Downloads on Apple TV, automatically downloading content during low-activity hours so it's ready for offline playback — a long-requested feature for users with unreliable connectivity.

Content ready before you look for it

tvOS 27 introduces Smart Downloads, a feature already present in other Apple contexts that now comes to the television platform. The system analyzes viewing habits and automatically downloads the next episodes of followed series, movies in the Watch Later list, and recommended content during nighttime or low-network-activity hours, when Apple TV is in standby but connected to power.

The announcement is among the 263 improvements listed in the WWDC 2026 keynote slide and reported in full by iClarified. It did not receive stage time, but it closes a concrete gap: until tvOS 26, Apple TV did not manage automatic pre-downloading of content, something competitors like Roku, Fire TV, and Google TV have offered for years.

Who benefits most

The feature is particularly useful for those with home connections that have bandwidth limitations during peak hours, for travelers who want to bring offline content on their Apple TV (or via AirPlay to a mobile device), and for those who use Apple TV in locations with intermittent connectivity. The system integrates with apps that support the tvOS background download framework, meaning support will also depend on adoption by third-party streaming app developers.
