tvOS 27 drops Apple TV HD and first-gen 4K: devices from 2017 left behind

tvOS 27 won't be available on the Apple TV HD (2015) or the first-generation Apple TV 4K (2017). Two devices still in active use are left without future updates, with no explicit announcement during the keynote.

tvOS 27, the quiet cut

The WWDC 2026 keynote spent very little time on tvOS 27, but the developer beta release notes reveal a significant compatibility cut: tvOS 27 won't be available on either the Apple TV HD — the 2015 model based on the A8 chip — or the first-generation Apple TV 4K from 2017, which uses the A10X Fusion chip.

As Thurrott documents, confirmed tvOS 27 features for supported models (Apple TV 4K second generation and later) include faster AirPlay to HomePod, a more responsive Control Center, and a redesigned Podcasts app — already covered in earlier reporting.

The communication that's missing

The fact that the cut wasn't communicated on stage is consistent with Apple's strategy in recent years: minimum compatibility announced in technical notes, not during peak media attention. For users with Apple TV HD or 4K gen 1, the message is that their hardware is stuck on tvOS 26 forever. It's not a technical surprise — those chips wouldn't handle the new AI stack — but the absence of an affordable upgrade path makes the cut hard to justify without a new entry-level model on the way.
