iOS 27: Photos app gains star ratings and customizable slideshows

iOS 27 brings two long-requested features to Photos: star ratings for organizing images by quality, and the ability to customize automatic slideshows.

Star ratings

The Photos app in iOS 27 introduces a star rating system, allowing users to assign a score to each image for easier selection and organization. Anyone managing large photo libraries — perhaps imported from external cameras — knows how useful it is to quickly mark the best photos without moving them to dedicated albums. Tools like Lightroom and even the Photos app on macOS already had this feature; now it comes to iPhone and iPad too.

Customizable slideshows

Separately, automatic slideshows that the app generates from albums or memories can now be customized by the user in terms of photo selection, order, and style. Previously, customization was minimal and the algorithm decided almost everything. Both features are confirmed in the list of 263 new features announced by Apple during the WWDC 2026 keynote, according to iClarified's coverage.
