Maps on iOS 27: natural language route search and improved offline maps

iOS 27 brings natural language routing search to Apple Maps — ask for directions the way you'd speak to a person — and significantly improves offline maps with wider coverage and more accurate visited places data. Guides expand to more locations and GPS accuracy in CarPlay improves.

Asking for directions the way you'd speak

Among the Maps improvements in iOS 27 surfaced in post-keynote technical documentation, one of the most practical is natural language routing search. According to MacRumors, users can describe an itinerary conversationally rather than entering formatted addresses — a change that aligns Maps with how people actually formulate navigation requests. The feature leverages the Apple Intelligence infrastructure already present in the system and fits within iOS 27's broader trend of making natural language the primary channel for AI interactions.

Offline maps and GPS in CarPlay

Offline maps receive a structural update: wider coverage, more accurate visited places data, and improved integration with Guides, which expand to new destinations. In CarPlay, GPS accuracy is improved, translating to more precise directions especially in complex urban environments. Route maps also receive a visual update in Fitness, for Apple Watch outdoor activity users. These are incremental improvements, but Maps continues to close the gap with Google Maps on the practical, everyday navigation features that matter.
