Apple Maps: Flyover upgraded with far more detailed aerial imagery

Apple announced a significant upgrade to Flyover in Apple Maps, delivering substantially higher-quality aerial imagery for supported cities.

Flyover gets a quality upgrade

At WWDC 2026, Apple showcased a notable improvement to Flyover, the three-dimensional aerial exploration mode in Apple Maps. Live coverage from MacRumors and Engadget indicates that city imagery and footage will be noticeably sharper and more detailed than the current version.

Flyover has existed for over a decade, introduced with iOS 6 in 2012 as a visual counterpart to Google's Street View. Apple has expanded geographic coverage over the years, but visual quality updates have been inconsistent. The WWDC 2026 announcement suggests a more systematic effort to refresh the underlying aerial data.

A quiet but useful improvement

Apple Maps has closed the gap with Google Maps significantly in recent years, particularly in local data accuracy and Siri integration. A sharper Flyover strengthens the case for Maps as both a navigation and visual exploration tool. The feature remains secondary to the AI announcements that dominated the keynote, but represents a tangible improvement for users who rely on Maps for more than turn-by-turn directions.
