Spotlight is no longer just a launcher
On macOS Golden Gate, system search changes architecture substantially. TechRepublic reports that Apple integrated Siri AI directly into Spotlight, enabling contextual answers within the search bar alongside Visual Intelligence features for on-screen content analysis. At the same time, the unified search infrastructure powering Spotlight, Mail, and Photos has been rewritten from the ground up to be "more stable and efficient," with indexing of new files and data happening almost immediately, as reported by Engadget.
This means that on an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS Golden Gate, searching for a document received seconds ago or a recently imported photo will produce immediate results, without the indexing delays that characterized previous versions. The infrastructure is shared with iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, but on Mac — thanks to superior computing power — the effect is particularly noticeable.
Integrating Siri AI into Spotlight also opens a new scenario for developers: App Intents registered correctly can now be triggered directly from system search, without the user having to open the app or explicitly invoke Siri. An architectural change that TechRepublic frames as part of Apple's overall Apple Intelligence strategy on Mac.
