iOS 27: system-wide dictation goes AI-first with automatic spelling and punctuation correction

Apple introduces a new dictation experience built into the iOS 27 keyboard, able to correct spelling, punctuation, and capitalisation in real time — moving onto the same ground as third-party apps like Wispr Flow.

Dictation becomes a professional tool

Until iOS 26, system dictation on iPhone was faithful but raw: it recorded every word including hesitations, leaving the user to correct spelling, capitalisation, and punctuation. With iOS 27, Apple changes the paradigm. As reported by TechCrunch, the new dictation is built directly into the keyboard and can automatically correct spelling, punctuation, and capitalisation in real time as you speak.

The challenge to third-party apps

TechCrunch explicitly notes that the move comes as AI dictation apps like Wispr Flow and Willow are gaining popularity, partly thanks to their ability to remove filler words ('ums', 'ahs') and format text based on context. Apple now enters this space with the advantage of native system integration, requiring no extra permissions and with access to any text field across the entire operating system.

The potential is clear for anyone who uses their phone on the go to produce text — emails, notes, long messages — but real-world quality versus specialised apps will only be assessed with daily use of the beta and the final autumn release.
