Image Playground 2: finally realistic images and new generation styles

Apple has deeply updated Image Playground: image generation moves away from the cartoon aesthetic and embraces far more realistic styles. New formats and sizes arrive too, along with the ability to apply effects to existing photos.

From forgettable feature to usable tool

When Apple launched Image Playground with iOS 18, the main criticism was the stylistic quality of the produced images: too cartoon-like, too flat to be truly useful. With iOS 27, Apple corrects course decisively. TechRadar noted that the feature "now looks genuinely usable": images can be generated in almost any style, including much more realistic ones, and in almost any size and format.

The Shortcut added that it is now possible to take existing photos and transform them with effects, style options, and more. Image Playground also becomes a generator for custom lock screen wallpapers, backgrounds for messages, and event invitations — functions that previously required third-party apps.

Deeper integration

The feature integrates across almost all Apple platforms, no longer confined to a single dedicated app. Genmoji, the system for creating custom emoji, also receives improvements to its underlying models. Everything remains subject to the same Apple Intelligence hardware compatibility restrictions: full functionality only on the most recent devices.
