GymKit, seven years later
Launched in 2017, GymKit always required an Apple Watch: users had to hold their wrist near compatible equipment to sync workout data in real time. With iOS 27, Apple breaks this exclusivity and brings GymKit connectivity to both iPhone and AirPods Pro 3. According to MacRumors, the expansion allows connection to certified cardio equipment — treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, and stair-steppers — without wearing a smartwatch.
Why it matters
The practical impact is on users who don't own an Apple Watch or prefer not to wear one during certain workouts. Speed, distance, and calorie data measured by the equipment will flow directly into Health and Fitness on iPhone, providing the same accuracy previously reserved for Watch users.
Compatibility
Works with existing GymKit-certified gym equipment; no machine updates required. The Apple-side requirement is iOS 27 on iPhone and updated firmware for AirPods Pro 3.
