Apple Watch Series 9 and watchOS 27: the device was compatible, the official page wasn't

Hours after the keynote, Apple had to correct its watchOS 27 compatibility page: Apple Watch Series 9 had been mistakenly omitted but does support the new operating system.

A rare Apple slip

On June 9, less than twenty-four hours after the keynote, Apple quietly updated the official watchOS 27 compatibility page to reinstate Apple Watch Series 9 among supported models. The device had been omitted from the initial version of the page, causing confusion among owners — who had already heard about the cut affecting Series 6, 7, 8, Ultra 1, and SE 2 models. MacRumors reported the correction, citing Apple's confirmation that Series 9 is fully compatible with watchOS 27.

Context of the real cut

The error should be read against the backdrop of a keynote in which Apple made one of the sharpest Apple Watch compatibility cuts in years. watchOS 27 requires Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Ultra 2, Ultra 3, or SE 3. Omitting the Series 9 — a model launched only in 2023 — had amplified the perception of a cut even more drastic than the real one. The quick correction suggests an editorial error in launch material preparation, not a technical change: the Series 9 shares the S9 architecture with sufficient performance for all watchOS 27 features, including Siri AI integration via iPhone.
