Apple Cash bill splitting: photograph a receipt, assign items, request payment via Wallet

iOS 27 brings an AI-guided bill-splitting feature to Apple Cash: photograph a receipt, assign items to individuals, and send payment requests directly from Wallet or Messages.

Bill splitting without third-party apps

One of iOS 27's quieter additions concerns Apple Cash and the Wallet app. As reported by MacRumors ahead of the keynote and confirmed in developer materials, the new bill-splitting feature lets users photograph a receipt, have AI extract line items, and manually assign them to individuals. Payment requests are then sent via Wallet or Messages.

Why it matters

The direct integration into Apple's ecosystem reduces the need for apps like Splitwise or Venmo for users who already rely on Apple Cash for daily payments. The pipeline — photo, item recognition, payment request — stays entirely on-device for image processing, consistent with the privacy-first approach Apple emphasised during the keynote. The feature requires iOS 27 and Apple Cash, currently available in the United States only.
