iOS 27 in the EU: AirPlay opens to Google Cast and alternative casting systems

In response to Digital Markets Act requirements, iOS 27 in the EU will allow content to be cast to Google Cast and other alternative casting systems, breaking AirPlay's exclusivity.

DMA obligation opens the ecosystem

Noted in pre-WWDC materials and confirmed in developer beta release notes, iOS 27 introduces in the European Union the ability to stream content to Google Cast-compatible devices — and potentially other AirPlay alternatives. The measure is directly attributable to Digital Markets Act obligations, which require Apple to ensure interoperability with third-party technologies.

What changes in practice

European users on iOS 27 will be able to cast video, audio, or screen content to TVs and speakers that support Chromecast or compatible stacks but not AirPlay. The feature does not replace AirPlay for the rest of the world: it remains a geographically limited concession born of regulatory constraint, not strategic choice. The real-world quality of the integration will become clearer during the beta period.
